How to apply for an NIE step by step
The procedure can be carried out either in Spain or from abroad.
Where can you apply for an NIE?
There are two main options:
-
In Spain, at Immigration Offices (Oficinas de Extranjería) or authorised Police Stations.
-
Abroad, at the Spanish Consulate corresponding to the applicant’s place of residence.
What documents must be submitted?
According to official information, the following must be provided:
-
The official application form (EX-15 form).
-
A valid and complete passport (original and copy).
-
Proof of the reason for requesting the NIE (for example, the intention to buy a property).
-
Payment of the corresponding fee.
The application must be submitted in person or through a duly authorised representative.
Is an appointment required?
In Spain, the application usually requires a prior appointment (cita previa), which is arranged through the Police Electronic Headquarters (Sede Electrónica de la Policía).
If applying from abroad, the procedure is carried out through the corresponding Spanish Consulate, which may also require a prior appointment.
How much does it cost to apply for an NIE?
The assignment of an NIE is subject to payment of an administrative fee.
The amount is paid using the official fee form and must be settled before submitting the application. The cost of the NIE is €9.84 (or €7.31 if we need to update it).
How long does it take to obtain an NIE?
The timeframe may vary depending on where it is requested:
-
If processed in Spain, the timing will depend on the office and administrative workload. In general, the processing time is usually around 2 weeks.
-
If requested through a Consulate, the procedure may take longer, as the documentation is sent to Spain for processing.
For this reason, it is advisable to start the process with sufficient time within the purchase schedule.
Is an NIE the same as being a resident in Spain?
No. The NIE is simply an identification number. It does not imply obtaining residency or the right to live in Spain.
A foreigner can hold an NIE as a non-resident, simply to carry out economic transactions such as purchasing a property.
Can you buy property in Spain without an NIE?
No. The NIE is essential to formalise the public deed, pay taxes and register the property.
Therefore, any foreign buyer must obtain it in advance, even if they do not intend to reside in Spain.
